Mata, find your fit.

Failing cesspool? Expanding housing off-grid? Connecting to an at-capacity sewer? Mata provides scalable, above-ground solids separation that keeps things flow all while protecting island waters.

Applications for Mata

Cesspool Improvement | Mata

No wastewater permits, no excavators, no pump trucks.
Drawing of a Mata installed next to a post and pier home with it's outflow going into an existing cesspool.
When your cesspool clogs or overflows, you shouldn’t have to spend tens of thousands replacing it. Work with a licensed plumber to install the Mata unit before your existing cesspool to intercepting 90% of solids before they end up in your cesspool, reducing backups and costly pump-outs.

✓ Affordable, Easy Install
Improve your cesspools performance by plugging Mata in just like an appliance. Since Mata connects to your sewer outflow you don't need to change a thing inside your room; keep your fixtures, faucets, and habits.

✓ Fits your lot
Mata's volume is 1/10th a septic tank and it's aboveground design makes it the perfect fit for tight lots and steep slopes.

✓ Protect the Reef
Cesspools provide 0% treatment to sewage: Mata captures 99.9% of bacteria and up to 40% nitrogen - protecting your property and our coasts.

Cesspool Improvement | Install Process

01 | Install Concrete Pad

A 3" concrete pad is installed to provide a stable foundation for your Mata.

02  |  Install Mata on Sewer  Before Cesspool

After the concrete is dry we can come back to complete your install. This starts by routing your sewer line through the Mata.

03  |  Install Vent

The Mata is vented to your roof line via a new vent stack.

04  |  Restart Cesspool

We recommend a pump out and sulphuric acid treatment to restart your cesspool on the right foot from day one.

Community Developments | Mata

As Hawaiʻi grows, many developments face the same sewerage challenges. Sewer systems and treatment facilities may be too distant or overloaded and excavation for septic systems will drive up costs and the possibility of archaeological findings and delays.
Mata captures solids so that the liquids require smaller piping and can be more easily treated for reuse. Check out Sawa on our In-development page for an at-grade disposal solution.

✓ Cost + Phasing
Mata's modular design grows with each stage of development, allowing flexible expansion.

✓ Sewer Capacity Limits
Mata reduces the load on nearby sewers and WWTP's, permitting more connections for growing communities.

New Build | Mata

Starting from scratch should be an opportunity — not a challenge.

Traditional septic systems demand excavation, permits, and high upfront costs, while composting or dry systems can compromise comfort and convenience. The Mata system bridges that gap — providing a flush-ready, aboveground solution that’s easy to install, modular by design, and built for Hawai‘i’s terrain.

✓ Easy Install
Mata’s lightweight, modular design ships and installs easily, even in steep or rocky terrain.
Mata adapts as your property evolves. Units can be relocated and networked to other infrastructure.

The Mata receives a 3" wastewater pipe at a minimum height of 16" above grade.

03  |   Install Vent and Overflow

The Mata is vented to your roof line. 24 hrs of emergency water storage or gravity overflow to disposal is installed.

04  |  Install Low Pressure Liquid Discharge

The treated liquid can be directed to a nearby sewer or WaiHome's at-grade leachfield product.

Permitting Process

Mata is a UPC §1009 compliant solids separator, meaning it just needs an over-the-counter plumbing permit and install by a licensed plumber.

However, our work doesn’t stop with Mata. With low pressure disposal integrated into every Mata, doors open to permit your project either through the County for sewer discharge systems or the Department of Health for onsite disposal.

We’re working with the University of Hawaii and regulators to certify our excavation free Patu liquid treatment unit and Sawa leachfield for permitted installation across Hawaiʻi.

Mata Maintenance

Mata separates solids from raw sewage and then dehydrates and steralizes them for disposal. The inclusion of two solids bins allows one bin to be filling while the second is drying. Solids are removed and the bins swapped once every 4-12 weeks depending on your usage.
