Affordable Wastewater Solutions for Hawaiʻi Homes

Looking to upgrade your cesspool but concerned about the cost of septic? Starting from scratch and unsure about burying your infrastructure? Meet Mata: a cleaner sanitation technology that is aboveground, compact, and designed for island conditions.

Mata Solid Waste Interceptor

No excavators, no pump trucks.
Mata installed next to a small studio home in a lush tropical valley.
Mata is a compact, above-ground solid waste interceptor designed in Hawaiʻi to meet the islands’ unique geographic and environmental challenges. Installed before a cesspool, leachfield, or sewer connection, it captures solids before they enter the ground — preventing clogs, reducing pump-outs, and keeping contaminants out of groundwater and coastal waters. Given that Mata is installed abovegrade, it requires a raised foundation.

Unlike conventional septic systems that require excavation and costly pump-outs, Mata installs on-grade quickly and adapts to almost any site — from tight residential lots to remote developments. Built for island conditions and future-ready design standards, it offers an affordable, low-impact solution that protects both your property and Hawaiʻi’s ecosystems.

Whether your cesspool is failing or you're planning a new system, skips the headaches of traditional septic tanks, choose Mata.

Key Features

Affordable Installation
Eliminate expensive excavation while minimizing disruption. Mata installs just like an appliance.
Works with Indoor Plumbing
Mata is not a composting system, it dehydrates solids; handling all your treatment needs without changes to your fixtures, faucets, or habits.
Reduce Solids Pumping
Mata captures 90% of solids before they go into your disposal system. Stopping pollution at the source.
No Odor
Post-separation solids are dried and odorless. Air from the system is filtered and vented away from your home.
Protect the Reefs
Untreated sewage carries nutrients that fuel algal blooms. Keeping solids out of the ground keeps nutrients out of the coasts.
Simple Permitting
As a UPC §1009 compliant solids separator, Mata doesn't require an expensive engineering design or time consuming permitting process.

Liquid Disposal

Wastewater passes through Mata, where solids are captured and treated. The remaining liquid continues on for on-site disposal. In most cases, this can be handled by the property's existing cesspool, provided it meets the criteria to be redesignated as a seepage pit. If the property doesn't have a viable cesspool, Mata can instead pair with a traditional leach field, mounded system, or other appropriate disposal system.

Cesspool to Seepage Pit
Hawai‘i Department of Health regulations allow a cesspool to be redesignated as a seepage pit once primary treatment is installed upstream. To qualify, the cesspool must pass a structural integrity inspection and an infiltration test confirming it still drains properly. Because a new leach field isn't automatically required, this redesignation can save property owners significant cost when upgrading to meet the Cesspool Conversion Mandate.

Blackwater Solids Removal Efficiency
Total Suspended Solids: 90% Removal
BOD5: 80% Removal (Solid Fraction)
Total Nitrogen: Up to 40% Removal (Solid Fraction)
Cleaner Effluent!
By separating solids from liquids at the source, Mata significantly improves the water quality entering the disposal system — outperforming the treatment level of a traditional septic system.

Mata to seepage pit.
Alleviate cesspool backups, clogs, and costly pump-outs. Install Mata upstream, solids are stopped from ever entering the soil, and liquid effluent goes into your cesspool with reduced pollution loads.

Mata to leach field.
An active assist pump within Mata’s separation tank allows your flexibility in pumping liquid effluent to leach fields or trenches.

“Well, I didn’t even know anything had changed.” Cristina

“The beautiful thing is that it’s so simple and there’s nothing much to do, but also just, honestly speaking, I appreciate the good feeling I get from it. I know humans have such a negative impact, and this has just had a positive impact, turning our waste into something useful. Just putting the water back in the ground without the solids makes me feel better about our valley.” Mark

“You can’t even smell it and we’re standing right here…It hasn’t had any effect on our day-to-day life. Pretty Insane” - Angela
